Parent Academy

Built to help busy parents understand the role technology plays in their kids’ lives— and what worried families can do about it.

Children grow up with the Internet, social media, devices and Apps as second nature while parents struggle to keep current on technology, let alone get ahead of the digital curve. As a result, parents are intimidated with the rapidly changing platforms and tools of technology. Without guidance from parents, children are left to figure things out on their own. The Parent Academy is designed to take the intimidation out of raising a digital native. Understand the motive and emotional ramifications of digital in order to make better parenting decisions in what is right for your family. From this, you will have the latest information, tools, tips and tricks to help parents feel comfortable raising their children in a fast-paced digital world.

Lesson Expectations:
Digital Culture Academy
To provide the science and psychology behind digital media’s impact on social, emotional, and behavioral influences & how it can impact our beliefs and even our culture. To do this, we start with an understanding of the business models and data collection practices that feed information to us and how they are designed to keep your attention. Then we identify the importance of developing emotional intelligence, empathy, critical thinking skills and digital literacy for students to become more aware of the intersection of their digital and real lives. The constant flow of information flooding children’s devices today makes it important to discuss digital literacy, fact-checking and create an understanding of the influence of digital media, texts and posts.
Substance Use Academy
Provide real examples of tactical methods used by drug companies to successfully target kids. Understand the physical and emotional differences that substance use has on a child’s brain vs an adult brain. Discuss the dangers of highly concentrated (vape juice, THC, Alcohol) substances and associated “serving sizes”. Prepare communities to identify the different ways that marijuana, vape, drug and alcohol industries are trying to infiltrate young minds.

Objectives: As a result of Academies, parents will be able to:
• Understand the current state of Digital and/or Substances
• Gain insights from the perspectives of children
• Identify ways to improve your habits
• Know the latest tools, tips and tricks to guide your children
